Description
GRID is an arcade racing game, but that doesn’t mean controlling every car is easy. Each car will react quite reasonably, for example when pressing the gas deeply in low gear has the potential to make the car turn easier.
The car is easy to control when turning, but this convenience is balanced with road conditions. You can feel the roughness of the road surface from the smooth asphalt to the roughness of the gravel pit. The road contours are created realistically so that you can feel the car tires rubbing against the sidewalk walls and make the car a little difficult to turn. If you make a mistake, you can use the Flashback feature to rewind time and repeat the difficult part.
GRID – Review
In GRID, you can choose one of the various races that can be taken to reach the final of the GRID World Series competition. You can freely jump between different races, whether it’s a touring race, GT, tuner, and so on.
The money you earn from racing can be used to buy new cars and recruit teammates who will join the races and help you on the circuit. Every car purchased can be customized with various livery designs and colours.
In GRID, there are several teams that you can challenge, including the Ravenwest team which is always a kind of “final boss” in every GRID game. But apart from them, there is also the FA Racing team consisting of tough esports racers led by the Formula 1 world champion, Fernando Alonso.
AI is one of the superior features in the GRID game. Codemasters prepares hundreds of AI characters with different traits and behaviours. The scripting system in the game makes each race result feel different and dynamic. No matter how difficult the AI is, this system ensures that AI can also make mistakes that you can later use to steal your position.
Although in theory, the system is quite interesting, in practice this scripting is sometimes a bit forced. On one or two occasions, the AI car can suddenly roll over for no apparent reason. There are also cases where a car is stuck in the middle of the road in an unreasonable position. If you’re not careful, you could get into an accident.
Besides making mistakes, AI can also react to your actions on the circuit. If you race roughly, the AI will enter Nemesis Mode. Nemesis will act more aggressively and will try to push you out of the way. Nemesis Mode can also happen to your teammates if it is roughed up. If so, he will not obey your orders to attack or defend.
GRID provides a very straightforward racing experience. Choose the type of race, choose the car, and you can race right away. But unfortunately, the practicality and fun of GRID gameplay must be limited by the relatively small number of cars and circuits. Half of the cars and circuits are content from old GRID games.
Codemasters will address the lack of content by releasing updates and DLCs on a regular and scheduled basis. However, it will take a long time before we get to the point where GRID will have enough content and it could be that many gamers are tired of waiting in the middle.
But if that’s okay with you, then GRID is a solid recommendation. Some games often include cool features and gimmicks, and at the same time forget the most important core gameplay. GRID is an example where core gameplay takes precedence. Take your joystick and start playing GRID!
