William said that Desmond was kidnapped because he thought that he can help the Templars find an entire ancient artefact scattered in all corners of the earth.
According to history, whoever manages to find and unite these artefact pieces, then he will get an unmatched magical power. The Templars were extremely dangerous, as were the artefacts. You can imagine what kind of power was contained in each of these artefacts.
